🍎 Fruit trees need consistent, even moisture to establish strong roots and produce healthy growth. Colorado’s dry air and fast-draining soils mean regular deep watering is essential.
💧 First Year (Critical for Establishment)
Frequency
- Spring & Fall: 1–2 times per week
- Summer (hot/dry): Every 2–3 days
- Reduce frequency after steady rainfall
Amount (Per Tree)
- Small (5–7 ft): 8–12 gallons per watering
- Medium (7–10 ft): 12–20 gallons
- Larger (10 ft+): 15–25 gallons
👉 Fruit trees prefer consistent moisture—not cycles of dry → soaking
🚿 How to Water (Very Important)
- Water slowly and deeply
- Focus on the root zone (drip line), not just the trunk
Best methods:
- Soaker hose in a circle around tree
- Drip irrigation
- Slow hose trickle (30–60 minutes)
👉 Create a watering basin around the tree to help water soak in
🍑 Special Notes for Fruit Trees
🍎 Apples
- Prefer steady, moderate moisture
- Tolerate slight drying between watering—but not prolonged drought
- Inconsistent watering can affect future fruit quality
🍑 Peaches
- Need more consistent moisture, especially in summer
- Sensitive to drought stress → can drop leaves or reduce fruiting
- Do not tolerate soggy soil—good drainage is key
❄️ Winter Watering (Often Overlooked)
Even dormant trees need moisture.
Water when:
- Temps are above 40°F
- Ground is not frozen
- No moisture for 2–3 weeks
Frequency:
- About once every 3–4 weeks
👉 Helps prevent winter root damage and spring stress
🌱 Best Practices
- Apply 2–4 inches of mulch (keep away from trunk)
- Water in the morning
- Check soil moisture 4–6 inches deep
- Ensure good drainage (critical for peaches)
🚫 Common Mistakes
- Letting soil dry out completely
- Overwatering (leads to root rot)
- Watering only at the trunk
- Skipping watering during hot summer periods
✔️ Simple Rule
Consistent, deep watering = healthier trees and better fruit production
